KYIV, Ukraine – The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has revealed a groundbreaking model of a new long-range unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as part of its ambitious project to establish 33 “cotton generation” facilities. These facilities, requiring a total investment of UAH 60 million, are poised to revolutionize Ukraine’s UAV capabilities and strategic defense. One notable aspect of the revelation is the estimated cost, which stands at UAH 1.81 million, approximately $50,000 per unit.

The unveiled UAV, known as the Morok, exhibits innovative features that promise to place Ukraine among the global leaders in UAV technology. The Morok’s price point, although higher than some mass-produced counterparts, positions it competitively within the UAV market.

Notably, the estimated cost of the Morok compares favorably to the Shahed-136, a similarly purposed UAV already in mass production. The Shahed-136 is priced between $20,000 and $50,000, making the Morok an attractive and viable alternative for defense and reconnaissance purposes.

Accompanying the announcement were two images, although they bear a resemblance to renderings, offering a glimpse into the Morok’s design. Despite the images’ modest quality, they reveal a UAV featuring an internal combustion engine located in the drone’s tail.

The Morok’s aerodynamic configuration is notably distinctive, resembling a duck, yet it lacks horizontal front feathers. Instead, it features a keel, representing a relatively rare tailless design within the subsonic aviation realm.

While tailless designs were actively employed in supersonic aircraft during the 1960s and 70s, such as the Mirage fighter, Concorde, Tu-144 airliners, and the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft, they are less common among subsonic aircraft. Typically, subsonic aircraft opt for the duck or flying wing scheme.

The Morok’s specifications indicate an impressive flight range of 800 kilometers, reinforcing its potential for extended surveillance and reconnaissance missions. This capability could prove invaluable in enhancing Ukraine’s national security and strategic defense capabilities.

The SBU’s unveiling of the Morok and the ambitious “cotton generation” facilities project underscores Ukraine’s commitment to advancing its defense technology and strengthening its position on the global stage. As developments continue, the international community will be closely monitoring Ukraine’s progress in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles.
