The Norwegian government has decided to donate a NASAMS support package to Ukraine’s air defense, consisting of two additional fire control centers, two launchers, and spare parts. “This will ensure endurance, redundancy, and flexibility, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the already donated air defense system to Ukraine,” said Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp).

Norway, in collaboration with the United States, had previously donated two complete NASAMS fire units to Ukraine. These additions came in addition to the two units donated by the United States in the fall of 2022.

“Air defense is a high-priority need from the Ukrainian side. Ukraine requires protection against Russian air power and missile attacks. The excellent operational results of NASAMS make air defense, in general, and NASAMS specifically, highly desirable for Ukraine,” said Gram.

The operational consequences for the Norwegian Armed Forces of donating the NASAMS support package are considered to be low.

Lithuania Donates Two NASAMS Launcher Units
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) recently signed a contract with Lithuania to update and prepare two older NASAMS launcher units for donation to Ukraine. These launcher units will reinforce the NASAMS systems previously donated by the United States and Norway. The donation was publicly announced in a press release by Lithuanian authorities on June 28, 2023, which also stated that Norway would donate additional equipment for the launcher units.

The continuous support from Norway, in collaboration with the United States and Lithuania, demonstrates the international commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. The NASAMS systems have proven their effectiveness, and these donations will further enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend against aerial threats and missile attacks.

This partnership not only showcases the solidarity among nations but also highlights the importance of international cooperation in maintaining regional security. The donated equipment will contribute to the protection of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Norwegian government’s decision to provide additional NASAMS equipment and Lithuania’s commitment to upgrading and donating launcher units underscores the shared goal of ensuring Ukraine’s security and defense. The donations will bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and enhance the country’s overall readiness in the face of potential threats.
