IAEA identifies Anti-Personnel mines near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine – In a recent “Walkdown” inspection of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), inspectors made a disconcerting discovery. Anti-personnel mines were found strategically placed between the internal and external perimeter of the facility, within a restricted area that is purportedly inaccessible to regular staff. While the IAEA has asserted that the presence of mines does not pose any direct risk to the nuclear plant’s safety, they have expressed concerns about the potential “unnecessary psychological stress” it may inflict on the dedicated plant staff.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, one of the largest nuclear power facilities in the world, plays a crucial role in Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Given the facility’s critical importance, the presence of anti-personnel mines in close proximity has raised alarm and highlighted security vulnerabilities in the restricted area surrounding the plant.

The IAEA, responsible for promoting the safe and secure use of nuclear energy, conducted the “Walkdown” inspection. During the inspection, the presence of the anti-personnel mines came to light, prompting immediate attention from the international community. The placement of such dangerous devices within a restricted area, despite assurances of inaccessibility to regular staff, raises serious questions about the overall security protocols at the nuclear facility. While the IAEA has concluded that the mines do not pose a direct risk to the nuclear plant’s operation or safety, their presence has the potential to create “unnecessary psychological stress” among the dedicated staff responsible for ensuring the plant’s smooth functioning.
