GhostSec hackers pursue High-Stakes cyberactivism, targeting satellites and industrial systems


The hacktivist collective known as GhostSec has gained attention for its bold and audacious cyberactivism, recently escalating its attacks to target critical infrastructure such as satellites, train systems, and industrial control systems. The group claims to fight for freedom and justice, with an unwavering determination to bring about positive change in the world.

GhostSec’s most recent exploits include penetrating Israeli Industrial infrastructure and sabotaging Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) devices. By gaining access to these satellites, the group wiped data and disabled future data recording, causing substantial disruption. Their motive was tied to the violent clashes in April 2023 between Israeli police and Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa mosque during Ramadan. In a rare show of high-level cyberattack, GhostSec sought to make a statement against the clashes and stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine.

They have also targeted critical infrastructure in Russia, including a massive explosion at the Gysinoozerskaya hydro-electric power plant. GhostSec took control of the plant’s Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and orchestrated a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, demonstrating a calculated effort to prevent collateral damage and protect human life.

GhostSec’s ability to disrupt industrial systems has alarmed researchers, who are now raising concerns about potential security risks to the space industry. The group has claimed responsibility for hacking satellite communication (SATCOM) devices, as well as executing the first-ever ransomware attack on an industrial RTU router, which is crucial for industrial control systems. With essential sectors like Government, Telecommunications, and Power heavily reliant on satellite technology, experts warn of severe consequences if malicious actors gain access to such critical infrastructure.
