Explosion at Turkish grain warehouse leaves 12 injured

A powerful explosion has rocked the Turkish Grain Board’s warehouse at Derince Port in Kocaeli province, Türkiye, resulting in at least 12 individuals sustaining injuries and causing extensive damage. The incident, which occurred at around 14:40 local time, has sparked an urgent investigation into its cause.

Initial reports indicate that the explosion struck the warehouse, leaving several people injured within its premises. The impact of the blast prompted immediate emergency responses, as firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene to offer medical aid.

The force of the detonation was so intense that shockwaves rippled through the vicinity, shrouding the area in a thick cloud of smoke and dust. The incident has left the town in a state of shock and disbelief.

Local authorities and emergency services are collaborating to determine the exact trigger for the explosion. An ongoing thorough investigation is underway to shed light on the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Preliminary findings from the initial investigation suggest that the explosion may have been a result of “wheat dust compression during the transfer of wheat from a ship to the silo,” according to Serdar Yavuz, the governor of Kocaeli province.

Kocaeli Mayor Tahir Büyükakın has reported that three of the injured individuals are in serious condition and have been admitted to hospitals. Fortunately, all personnel present at the scene have been accounted for.

The Transport Ministry has confirmed that no ships were impacted by the explosion. “We heard an explosion noise and we saw the explosion hit TMO’s silos. Four injured people were sent to hospital,” stated Derince Mayor Zeki Akgün.
