The Ukrainian Defense Forces, also known as the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), are the military forces responsible for the defense and security of Ukraine. They are under the control of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and consist of various branches, including the Ukrainian Ground Forces, Ukrainian Naval Forces, Ukrainian Air Force, and other specialized units.

Following Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the country established its own armed forces. However, it should be noted that my knowledge is based on information available up until September 2021, and the situation may have evolved since then.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces have been involved in several significant conflicts and operations. Notably, they have been engaged in an ongoing armed conflict with pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, primarily in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions since 2014. This conflict has resulted in significant casualties and has had a profound impact on Ukraine’s security and defense policies.

The Ukrainian government has sought to modernize and strengthen its armed forces through reforms and international cooperation. Assistance and support have been provided by various countries, including the United States and European nations, to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

It’s important to note that the situation in Ukraine is dynamic, and developments may have occurred since my knowledge cutoff. For the most up-to-date information, I recommend referring to reliable sources and news outlets.
